In an effort to overturn the decision of the Court of Appeal last Tuesday, which upheld the appointment of Oba Ghandi Olaoye as Soun of Ogbomoso, Prince Kabir Olaoye of Ogbomoso has made his way to the Supreme Court.

In a lawsuit filed in 2022 (HOG/27/2022), Kabir questioned the selection and nomination of Prince Olaoye as Soun-elect, stating that there were multiple violations of the Soun Chieftaincy Declaration.

Regardless of the lawsuit, Olaoye was installed by the kingmakers in September 2023 after Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed his nomination.

In October 2023, though, the installation took a surprising turn when an Oyo State High Court in Ogbomoso removed Oba Olaoye from his position as Soun of Ogbomosoland.

Oba Olaoye’s tenure as Soun of Ogbomosoland came to an abrupt end in October 2023 when he was removed from office by an Oyo State High Court in Ogbomoso.

However, the administration of Oyo State moved quickly to secure an injunction that would prevent the ruling from being enforced, thereby allowing Oba Olaoye to be coronated in December 2023.

The Ogbomoso court’s decision was also appealed by the state administration.

IREPORT247NEW reported that Prince Muhammad Kabiru Olaoye’s charges against the Soun, which he won at the High Court, were dismissed by the Appeal Court in the ruling on February 18, 2025, confirming Oba Ghandi’s status as the Soun.

Nevertheless, Olaoye expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision of the appellate court and directed his attorneys to appeal to the Supreme Court in a Sunday interview with Punch.

“I am not satisfied with the judgment of the appeal court. We are not relenting until we reclaim our mandate through the Supreme Court, he said.

“We are not giving up. Outright, we say no to the judgment given by the appeal court in Ibadan.

“We are going to the Supreme Court. We are not in agreement with the judgment of the appeal court. So, for this reason, we are heading to the Supreme Court.”
