Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, marked his inauguration on Monday with a significant act of clemency, granting freedom and reduced sentences to 43 prisoners.

This move underscores his commitment to justice reform and demonstrates his belief in second chances and rehabilitation.

Key Highlights of the Clemency

– Immediate Release: Eight convicts were granted immediate release.

– Commutation of Death Sentences: 15 death row inmates had their sentences commuted to prison terms.

– Reduced Sentences: 20 inmates serving life sentences were granted reduced jail terms.

Aiyedatiwa’s decision was guided by the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the governor’s move, stating that it reflects his responsibility to ensure the justice system shows mercy and humanity .

This act of clemency aligns with Aiyedatiwa’s broader judicial reforms. In October 2024, he swore in six new judges to strengthen the state’s legal system. With his second term underway, Aiyedatiwa has set a clear tone for his administration: a government focused on justice, fairness, and second chances.
