Kemi Badenoch, the Leader of the Opposition, has strongly condemned the British government’s decision to cancel the planned increase in defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030.

In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Badenoch described the decision as “indefensible” amid rising global threats, particularly from Russia’s escalating aggression and former US President Donald Trump’s insistence that NATO allies contribute more.

Badenoch argued that Britain risks losing its leadership position in global security if it fails to increase defense spending. She emphasized the worsening security landscape in Europe, highlighting the threat posed by Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The Opposition leader also pointed out the Prime Minister’s apparent contradiction in suggesting that British troops could be deployed in Ukraine while refusing to boost military spending.

The UK’s Chief of Defence Staff, Sir Tony Radakin, has also emphasized the need for increased defense funding to meet growing global security challenges.

The government has announced plans to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030, but Badenoch urged the government to restore the planned spending increase and commit to further defense investments before the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to meet President Trump.

Badenoch proposed redirecting funds from other areas, such as overseas development, to bolster defense spending. She also criticized the government’s welfare policies, arguing that they prioritize increased welfare spending over national security.

The controversy surrounding the Chagos Islands was also highlighted by Badenoch, who called the government’s handling of the issue an “indefensible surrender of British territory”. She warned against striking a rushed deal with Mauritius that would see Britain cede control of the islands.

In conclusion, Badenoch’s letter emphasized the need for urgent action to address the growing threats to national security. She warned that history has been unforgiving to politicians who chose procrastination over action in the face of growing threats ¹.
