Osun State’s local government election has taken a significant step forward. The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) presented certificates of return to the newly elected chairmen and councillors.

This development comes after the state government defied advice from the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Egbetokun, to discontinue the exercise.

According to OSSIEC’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, the Commission’s chairman, Hashim Abioye, presented the certificates to the elected officials, congratulating them on their victory. Abioye urged the new chairmen to be good ambassadors of democracy, serving the people with integrity and transparency.

The election saw the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerge victorious, with all 332 councillorship and 30 local government chairmanship seats won by PDP candidates. However, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the results, claiming that the election did not hold in any part of the state.

Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier advised residents to cast their votes without fear of intimidation, urging political stakeholders and the electorate to shun violence during and after the election.

Despite the APC’s rejection of the results, the OSSIEC’s presentation of certificates of return marks a significant milestone in the election process.
