Sadiq Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military ruler General Sani Abacha, has come out in defense of his late father amid renewed criticism.

In a Facebook post, Sadiq expressed admiration for his father’s leadership, suggesting that he was a victim of jealousy and subtle betrayal.

Sadiq’s statement comes on the heels of the launch of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, which has sparked extensive discussions.

Babangida’s book sheds light on the controversial annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which he admitted was won by MKO Abiola. The former leader revealed that forces within his government, allegedly led by Abacha, orchestrated the move without his full awareness.

General Sani Abacha remains a highly debated figure in Nigeria, with his government credited for economic stabilization and strong security policies. However, allegations of corruption and human rights violations continue to mar his legacy.

Sadiq’s defense of his father is not surprising, given the family’s history. In a 2020 interview, Sadiq spoke about the challenges he faces due to his family’s name, including being harassed at airports. He also addressed the controversy surrounding his father’s wealth, stating that the reports are disturbing.

Critics of Abacha’s regime have been vocal about the human rights abuses and corruption that occurred during his rule. Ayo Sogunro, a Nigerian lawyer and writer, wrote an open letter to Sadiq in 2014, detailing the brutality of Abacha’s regime and the impact it had on ordinary Nigerians.

As the debate surrounding Abacha’s legacy continues, it’s clear that opinions on his rule remain sharply divided. While Sadiq and his family may defend his father’s actions, many Nigerians remember the brutality and corruption that defined his regime.
