Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has warned the US that her country won’t tolerate any invasion of its sovereignty in the fight against drug cartels.

This comes after the US designated eight Latin American drug trafficking groups, including the Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa cartels, as terrorist organizations.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico seeks collaboration, not subordination or intervention, from the US. Her government has also announced plans to expand legal action against US gun manufacturers, accusing them of negligence in selling weapons that end up with drug traffickers

The US designation allows for economic sanctions and has raised concerns about potential military action. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has attempted to alleviate these concerns, stating that the US prefers to work with Mexico in addressing the issue.

Mexico has also reported that between 200,000 to 750,000 US-manufactured weapons are smuggled into the country annually, contributing to drug-related violence. In response, Sheinbaum’s government has deployed more troops to the US-Mexico border and announced significant drug seizures.
