A devastating case of arson has been reported in Ogun State, where cattle herders allegedly set fire to a 35-acre cassava farm in Adao Village, via Alabata, Abeokuta.
The farm, owned by Mr. Ogunbayo Adewale, is estimated to have suffered damages worth N27.3 million.
According to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, the incident occurred on February 19, 2025, when the farm owner discovered that his farm had been set ablaze, with several cassava plants uprooted and cattle grazing on the farm.
The police have launched an investigation into the matter, with the Divisional Police Officer of FUNAAB Harmony deploying grassroots policing strategies to calm tensions and prevent potential tribal conflict.
The case has been transferred to the surveillance section for further inquiries and necessary legal action.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in the region, who have suffered losses due to cattle herding activities. A similar incident was reported in 2021, where a farmer’s cassava farm was destroyed by cattle herders in Igbogila, Ogun State.
