Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to leading Africa’s digital trade agenda under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The goal is to create over 10 million new jobs across the continent by the end of 2025.
This follows Nigeria’s designation as Africa’s Digital Trade Champion. This role recognizes the country’s progress in digital commerce, services, and innovation.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, emphasized Nigeria’s position as the continent’s digital trade hub. “Our innovations in mobile payments have transformed cross-border payments, financial inclusion, and digital transactions across the continent,” he said.
The AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol aims to increase intra-African trade from 18% in 2022 to 50% by 2030. Nigeria has over 109 million internet users. It also boasts a thriving mobile economy. Thus, Nigeria has the foundation to lead Africa’s digital commerce evolution.
Several initiatives are driving this growth, including:
– National Talent Export Programme: Launched by President Bola Tinubu in September 2023 to promote Nigerian talent globally.
– Outsource to Nigeria Initiative: Backed by the Office of the Vice President to encourage outsourcing to Nigeria.
– Three Million Technology Talents Programme: Implemented by the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy to develop Nigerian tech talent.
Nigeria has modernized its passport application system. It has also invested in port infrastructure. These initiatives streamline trade procedures and enhance Nigeria’s ability to handle West Africa’s cargo.
