Zamfara Market Explosion: 2 Killed, 50+ Injured

A devastating explosion rocked the Talata Mafara weekly market in Zamfara State on Tuesday, leaving two people dead and over 50 others injured.

The deceased, Muhammad Lawal Matusgi and Sani Adamu Kanarkalgo, succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred around 11:30 am in the section of the market where locally fabricated guns are sold.

A medical worker at the General Hospital in Talata Mafara reported that the facility was already overstretched before the incident, forcing them to refer several victims to Sokoto for further treatment.

The Red Cross provided vehicles to transport the injured to Sokoto for specialist care, courtesy of former Governor Abdulazeez Yari.

A local government worker described the explosion as devastating, calling on the government to relocate gun sellers to a safer location outside the market.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the explosion, with the Spokesman, ASP Yazid Abubakar, promising to provide an update after receiving a full briefing.
