Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda has denied rumors of her resignation.
Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda has come out to deny rumors circulating online suggesting she’s resigned from her position. Her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, debunked the rumor on Wednesday, hopefully putting the speculation to rest.
“I’m in the office. The speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from.
“This is the handiwork of mischief makers working for the impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who have been commissioned to spread fake news on social media to mislead the public and maintain pressure on the current leadership of the House. We are aware of this, and it will not succeed,”.
“fake resignation letter” originally circulated on Monday by “paid bloggers.”
“I urge members of the public to ignore such reports, as they are fake, unfounded, and without any iota of truth,” CPS Segun Ajiboye discosed
Interestingly, a circular dated February 17, 2025, allegedly released by Meranda, had been making the rounds on social media for two days, claiming she’d stepped down.
However, upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the letter wasn’t signed by anyone, casting doubt on its authenticity.
This development comes on the heels of a leadership crisis that’s been rocking the Lagos State Assembly since former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed by the majority of lawmakers. Obasa has been adamant that he’s still the rightful speaker, insisting his impeachment didn’t follow due process.
Obasa has also alleged that Meranda’s election as the new speaker was unlawful and that a fake mace was used during her installation.
Furthermore, he claimed hundreds of policemen stormed the assembly to intimidate his loyalists and even invaded his official residence, preventing his family members from leaving the house.
Despite Obasa’s claims, the state lawmakers have urged residents to disregard his assertions, warning him not to escalate tensions.
Meanwhile, Meranda’s denial of the resignation rumor puts to rest speculation about her position, at least for now
This development comes amid a leadership crisis in the Lagos Assembly, which began after former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed by lawmakers.
Pundits are watching keenly where the pendulum would fall.
