The Bauchi State Government has initiated measures to mitigate the impact of flooding ahead of the forthcoming rainy season. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Hajara Wanka announced this during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on flood disaster sustainable management strategy.

The meeting aimed to “Build Resilience and Collaborative Solutions for Flood-Affected Communities” by engaging stakeholders from flood-affected areas in 2024. Wanka emphasized the need for proactive and preventive strategies to combat flooding.

According to Adamu Neyola, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency, 16 local government areas were affected by flooding in 2024. The stakeholders’ meeting sought to identify areas not captured during the assessment and develop solutions to mitigate flood disasters.

The North-East Development Commission also assured its commitment to addressing disasters in the Northeastern region. Bauchi State is taking proactive measures to prevent flooding, having been the second-most affected state in Nigeria after Borno in 2024.
