The Federal Government has vowed to investigate the alleged hoarding of relief materials meant for internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the country. This comes after the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, Aliyu Ahmed, uncovered relief supplies hoarded inside classrooms at the Durumi IDP camp in Abuja.
During his visit to the camp, Ahmed expressed his disappointment and concern over the situation, stating that the classrooms were being used to store food and non-food items instead of being distributed to the IDPs. He assured that the government will take severe action against those responsible.
The commissioner announced plans to set up a committee to investigate similar cases in other IDP camps across the country. He emphasized that the government is committed to the welfare of the IDPs and will not tolerate any form of mismanagement or corruption.
In addition to the investigation, the commission has pledged to support the education of displaced children by working with the Universal Basic Education Commission to provide teachers. The Founder of Brightlife Vision Foundation, Hajia Binta Sidi, has also disclosed plans to train 1,000 IDPs nationwide.
The government’s commitment to investigating the alleged hoarding of relief materials and supporting the welfare of IDPs is a welcome development. However, it remains to be seen how effective these efforts will be in addressing the challenges faced by IDPs across the country.
