
The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon saw a familiar trend as Kenyan and Ethiopian runners once again claimed top honors in the men’s and women’s categories. Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerged victorious in the men’s category, completing the 42km course in 2:14:06 and taking home the $50,000 prize money.
Kibet’s win marked his second title in the competition, having previously won in 2023. He improved on his third-place finish in the 2024 edition, where his compatriot Bernard Sang won with a time of 02:16:49.
In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa secured her first win in the competition, clocking a time of 2:37:04.
Meanwhile, Nigerian athlete Nyango Gyang Boyi made history by finishing in the top 10 positions, coming in eighth with a time of 2:25:41.58. Boyi’s impressive performance earned him a $4,000 prize award and the N2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.
The 2025 Lagos City Marathon saw thousands of runners participate, with the 42km course starting at Western Avenue in Surulere and finishing in front of Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also participated in the event.
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has continued to grow in prestige, having been awarded a gold label by World Athletics in 2023, less than eight years after its inaugural edition.
