Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers is optimistic that Chloe Kelly will be available for Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham in the Women’s Super League.
The England forward is set to make her debut for the Gunners after joining on loan from Manchester City on transfer deadline day, following a challenging spell at Joie Stadium.
Due to eligibility rules, Kelly couldn’t participate in the recent matches against her parent club in the WSL and Women’s League Cup. Additionally, she was cup-tied for the FA Cup win over London City Lionesses.
Kelly, who has been eager for this change since January, hasn’t played in the WSL since December 15, when City faced Everton.
“We’re confident she’ll be available for Sunday, and we understand the impact she can have on our team,” said Slegers. “I’m excited for her debut and eager to see her contributions.”
Despite being left out of the Lionesses’ squad for the upcoming Women’s Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain, Kelly is determined to reclaim her place ahead of Euro 2025.
Before her transfer to Arsenal, she expressed on social media her ambition to be in peak form to represent her country at the Euros.
When asked about Kelly’s potential return to the England squad, Slegers replied, “That’s beyond my control, but our focus is on getting the best out of Chloe. She’s embraced the situation and is thrilled to be with us. She’s eager to seize every opportunity, whether in matches or training, to elevate her game and regain her rhythm.”
Should Kelly feature in the match against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium, it will mark her second debut for Arsenal, having progressed through the club’s academy.
“She returns with strong qualities as an attacking player and brings a fierce determination to defend and work hard,” Slegers noted.
Currently, Arsenal sits in third place in the WSL, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, while Tottenham occupies the sixth position.
