Lassa Fever Outbreak:112 Cases Confirmed, 12 Death in Ondo

According to information released by the NCDC on its official website, the number of verified cases increased from 54 in week one of 2025 to 89 in week two alone.

IREPORT247NEW reported that Ondo, Edo, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Kogi, and Ebonyi States were among the states where cases were reported and within the first two weeks of 2025, with 77 percent of the confirmed cases, Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states make up the majority. Ondo leads with 38 percent, followed by Edo with 22 percent, and Bauchi with 17 percent. Four additional states account for the remaining 23% of cases.

According to the state government, there have been 353 reported infections and 112 confirmed cases of Lassa fever in Ondo State, resulting in at least 12 fatalities.

In an address to employees of the Ondo State Waste Management Authority on Tuesday in Akure, Olusola Ajayi, the Acting Statistician-General of Ondo State, disclosed this information.

Ajayi urged the organization to work with health stakeholders in order to help stop the disease’s spread and guarantee a cleaner environment.

“We are all in this together, and we must act fast. As of today, Ondo State has recorded 353 cases of Lassa fever, with 112 confirmed cases and 12 deaths. If we want to take action, the time is now.”

Also, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, the state Ministry of Health’s Permanent Secretary, recently revealed that Ondo had documented around 400 suspected cases since the most recent outbreak.

Dr. Ikuomola said the Federal Government, Nigeria Center for Disease Control, and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria had donated the facility to enhance detection and treatment efforts while speaking in Akure at the opening of a new Lassa fever diagnostic center.

He gave his word that the state administration was working nonstop to guarantee the laboratory’s operation and improve coordination with pertinent agencies in order to lower the number of fatalities.

“We have inspected the equipment provided by the Federal Ministry of Health, through NCDC and facilitated by IHVN. With this, we expect to improve case detection and management significantly.

“As of last week, we had over 400 suspected cases and more than 100 confirmed cases. While there have been fatalities, the state government is making efforts to reduce deaths from Lassa fever”
