Felix Sughter Nyikyaa, a new student at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in Markudi, Benue State, drowned in the Niger River.

Felix vanished on Sunday, February 9, 2025, according to Ashar Lubem, President of the National Association of Benue State Students, who verified the incident to Punch.
Lubem also revealed that on Tuesday, February 11, the student’s body was discovered floating by the riverbank following multiple searches by rescuers.
“The incident happened two days ago and rescuers searched for him. His body was found this morning (Tuesday). We are still looking into the situation to know maybe it was a case of drowning or he was killed because his body was seen floating by the riverbank,” he stated.
Although the circumstances behind his drowning could not be determined, Lubem stated that the student association was making efforts to get in touch with his family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the student, and we mourn the loss of a young and promising life.
“The student’s passing is a tragic reminder of the fragility of life, and we are reminded to cherish every moment we have with our loved ones.
“We also urge all students to be mindful of their well-being and to seek help if they are struggling with their emotions or if they need support.
“The university is here to support you, and we want to ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.”
