An officer has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly shooting and killing Bright Egbule, a father of six, in the Omagwa community in the state’s Ikwerre local government area.
In the early hours of Sunday, Omagwa community youths, in protest of Egbule’s murder, blocked the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road while carrying the deceased’s body. Their action stemmed from the fact that they were not allowed to dispose of the deceased’s body at the Omagwa Police Station.
In a SMS issued to reporters, Grace Iringe-Koko, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), stated that the victim’s body had been placed in the morgue and that life had returned to normal in the neighborhood.
“The command is aware, and the Commissioner of Police is on top of the situation, Iringe-Koko stated.
“Normalcy has now been restored, and adequate security is present on the ground to prevent any breach of peace.
“The corpse has been deposited at the morgue while the police officer has been detained while investigation ongoing please.”
