Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi State has lifted the ban on using gas cylinders for cooking in student hostels.
The decision was announced by Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Sa’id Umar, during the orientation ceremony for new students on Sunday.
Speaking on fire hazards, Umar Lawal, Assistant Superintendent of Fire I, Federal Fire Service, warned that 90% of fire outbreaks are caused by carelessness, negligence, or ignorance.
The Federal Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer in Bauchi cautioned students not to overload electrical circuits, since this considerably increases the risk of fire outbreaks in hostels.
“Fire safety is important in every facet of life. “Preventing fires helps protect lives, property, and the environment,” he stated.
“Every circuit box has a maximum current capacity. Overloading electrical appliances in hostels raises the risk of fire,” he added.
Lawal further urged students to purchase gas cylinders only from authorised dealers or regulated gas stations under the supervision of the Department of Petroleum Resources.
Dr. Aisha Alhassan, Deputy Dean of Students’ Affairs, stated that the university plans to conduct regular sanitation initiatives.
She encouraged students to treat the hostels as if they were their homes, and to take responsibility for keeping them clean and safe.
