Following a dispute between the two nations last month over the treatment of the first batch of migrants, who came chained and handcuffed, Brazil welcomed a second plane of migrants deported from the United States on Friday.

An AFP photographer on the site confirmed that the civilian plane carrying 111 passengers had departed from Louisiana and arrived in northeastern Fortaleza, according to a Brazilian official source who spoke to AFP.

US President Donald Trump authorized a series of actions against undocumented immigrants shortly after he took office last month, including the deployment of troops on the Mexican border and widespread raids and deportations.

88 Brazilians arrived in handcuffs and with shackles on their feet on the first trip under Trump, alleging that they had not been provided water or permitted to use the restroom.

Brazil responded by calling on the senior US envoy to provide an explanation for what the government described as the “flagrant disregard” for the rights of the migrants.

Elmano de Freitas, the governor of Ceara state, told a press conference Thursday that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had decreed that the most recent flight entering Brazil must land in the closest location so that Brazilians are not left handcuffed on the plane.
