Reps Suggests Establishing Etiti, Lagoon, Warri, Okun And 27 Other New States

The House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee has proposed creating 31 additional states in addition to the country’s 36 existing states.

The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who oversaw the plenary session in Abuja, read the letter the committee wrote to the House of Representatives, which contained this information.

A total of six new states in the North Central, four in the North East, five in the North West, five in the South-South, and seven in the South West are being proposed, the committee said.

The states under consideration are: FCT State; Amana State from Adamawa; Katagum from Bauchi State; Savannah State from Borno; Muri State from Taraba; Okun State, Okura State, and Confluence State from Kogi; and Benue Ala and Apa States from Benue.

The states also include New Kaduna State and Gujarat State from Kaduna State; Tiga and Ari from Kano; Kainji from Kebbi State; Etiti and Orashi as the 6th state in the Southeast; Adada from Enugu; and Orlu and Aba from the Southeast.

Others are Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos, and Ogun, Ijebu from Ogun, and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo/Ogun/Osun states.

“As amended, this section outlines specific requirements that must be fulfilled to initiate the process of state creation,” the letter states. These requirements contain the following information. new borders and a new state. 1. Only when at least a third of the members of the National Assembly support a measure intended to establish a new state will it be approved.

The National Assembly receives the House of Representatives, the House of Assembly, and the Local Government Council relevant to the region. The only reminder given to local government advocates for the establishment of new local government areas is that this procedure is governed by Section 8 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution, as amended.

In particular, the results of the referendum’s State Houses of Assembly votes must be sent to the National Assembly in order to fulfill state demands, as stipulated in Section 8.3 of the Constitution.

Resubmitted proposals must strictly adhere to the requirements. Send three hard copies of the memoranda’s complete proposal to the Committee Secretariat in Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja. Additionally, electronic subcopies must be provided to info.hccr.gov.nj, the Committee’s email address.

The committee would only take into consideration recommendations that adhere to the established parameters and is still dedicated to supporting implementation efforts that are in keeping with the constitutional provisions.
