The Senate President Goodwill Akpabio reflected on his time as a student at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), he revealed that he was never able to stay on the main campus, which had continuous electricity. He decided to stay in Malabo and fight the insects instead.
Speaking in Abuja during a courtesy call by UNICAL’s administration and alumni, who extended an invitation to him to attend the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Akpabio, a UNICAL alumnus, stated that he would be present from March 17 to 22, 2025.
“I advocated for the students’ interests while serving as Speaker of the Student Parliament. I was never fortunate enough to live on the main campus where there was always electricity.
Akpabio recounted, “Instead, I went with Malabo, with all the mosquitoes.” Being invited to join you on this special occasion is a huge honor, and it’s a pleasure to be alive to witness the University at 50. The university will undergo a unique metamorphosis after this visit.
“Akpabio said he was thrilled to be a part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebration and called it a momentous occasion. He underlined how crucial it is to support the university and promised to help out wherever he could with the event’s activities.
“Earlier, the group was led by UNICAL Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Banku Obi, who explained their goal of inviting Akpabio to the momentous occasion.
She noted his noteworthy achievements to UNICAL while serving as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and revealed that he has been named an Ambassador for UNICAL at the age of 50. “We have come here today to show the world that we have matured as a second-generation university in Nigeria,” Professor Obi continued.
