Xabi Alonso, the coach of Bayer Leverkusen, responded to Victor Boniface’s unsuccessful winter transfer window attempt to join Al-Nassr.

After joining Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium in the summer of 2023, Boniface has been playing well, scoring 30 goals and dishing out 11 assists in 50 games across all competitions.

Al-Nassr took notice of his performances, and rumors circulated that the Saudi club, the player, and Leverkusen had come to a deal.

But the agreement fell through, and Al-Nassr decided to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran instead.

Even though his future is unknown, Boniface scored in Leverkusen’s 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim to cap off a two-month injury layoff.

The Nigerian international’s strong left-footed goal opened the scoring into the bottom right corner, helping the Bundesliga leader maintain their strong campaign.

After the game, Alonso spoke, praising Boniface’s response while acknowledging the discomfort of the situation.

“After his injury, it was a significant moment for him,” Bild cited Alonso as saying.

“Last week, things were a little odd and awkward. For Boni’s mental health, it was critical that he felt valued once more and that he experience the fans’ affection.”

Alonso also mentioned that Boniface might play with Patrik Schick, who has been playing well when he isn’t there. “That’s a future possibility. Following the Hoffenheim match, Alonso remarked, “Perhaps they can play together.”

Now that the transfer window has ended, Boniface is anticipated to be a vital member of Leverkusen’s squad as they attempt to retain their Bundesliga championship.
