Fin Smith will start at fly-half and Marcus Smith at full-back for England in their Six Nations opener against France at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.
Fin Smith, 22, of Northampton, who has earned seven caps off the bench, will make his maiden Test start if confirmed.
It indicates that Marcus Smith, who started England’s last eight games at number 10, is ready to move to his more unfamiliar position of full-back.
On Thursday, England will announce their starting lineup and substitutes.
Encouraged by a 53-10 victory in this match two years prior, France comes to Twickenham having dominated Wales in round one.
In the meantime, Steve Borthwick’s team had lost seven straight games against tier one countries after Ireland defeated England in Dublin.
“We are the England rugby team, and we want to win, and we know the expectations that come with it,” senior coach Richard Wigglesworth stated in an interview with Rugby Union Weekly.
Since that is what I want and what we are all aiming for, I don’t mind if others want to see more victories. “The outcome that we want is to win, so we are not avoiding that.”
Tom Willis is rumored to be in position for his maiden Test start at number eight, while England is also expected to make changes in the back row and back three.
According to Wigglesworth, the coaches must balance selecting the best team to defeat France with making consistent selections.
“What England did for many, many years was chop and change the team, so you end up with low levels of cohesion and low levels of trust in the coaches,” he stated. And for a long time, that didn’t work.
“We don’t want to be frightened into repeating past mistakes because we know what hasn’t worked. However, we must consider all of those factors and select the best squad on the field.”
