The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, declared on Wednesday that once finished, the second phase of the Adiyan Water Works will offer 70 million gallons of water per day to residents.

Sanwo-Olu revealed this during a tour of the Adiyan Water Works in Ogun, where the project had achieved 80% completion.

“I believe the most significant achievement for us has been what we have witnessed in Adiyan. Adiyan II is designed to produce 70 million gallons per day, and today’s inspection shows that it is almost 80% complete.

“The electromagnetic and electromechanical components, including the pumps, are on-site, and installation will begin shortly.

“I’ve been informed that roughly 70 to 75 percent of the necessary equipment has arrived, particularly for the raw water intake, where pipes are being installed from Akute to the Ogun River.

“The contractor is working on all three components of the project and has assured us that in another 10 to 12 months, this place will be completely transformed,” he told me.

The governor praised both the contractor and the local community for working together to ensure that Lagos citizens have access to safe drinking water.

“These pipes reach all the way to Akute, where water is extracted from the Ogun River and transmitted to Adiyan.

“The local community is just as thrilled as we are, as seen by the warm welcome we received.

“Compensation has already been paid by both the Lagos and Ogun state governments,” according to Sanwo-Olu. However, he noted that more effort must be done to ensure that the project is completed before the conclusion of his second term.

“We still have a lot of work to do in terms of transmission and capacity expansion.

“This is another promise kept, albeit belatedly. It will be a project that Lagosians can be proud of, benefiting both the state’s economy and quality of life,” he stated.

The governor emphasized that supplying adequate drinking water to improve inhabitants’ living conditions is a basic government responsibility, particularly in a megacity like Lagos.

“Water is a critical resource that the government must provide, and we are pleased that Adiyan II will fulfil this responsibility,” Sanwo-Olu told Reuters.

He also stated that efforts will be made to install pipelines across the Lagos Lagoon to bring water to the island, which includes Ikoyi and Lekki.
