Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo in the Ifo Local Government Area, was suspended for six months by the Ogun State Government on Monday for what it described as “uncivil conduct.”

In a video, the traditional monarch was shown verbally abusing and assaulting an old man named Areola Abraham while he was prostrating.

Ganiu Hazmat, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, disclosed in a statement in Abeokuta that Ogunjobi’s conduct was not befitting the status of a king.

Hamzat clarified that the government’s decision was made in an effort to protect the sanctity of the traditional institution and to ensure human dignity.

The commissioner pointed out that the decision was made after the traditional ruler and his victim were invited to the Ministry for questioning.

He claimed that the invitation became necessary due to the traditional ruler’s careless remarks and public misconduct, which were made clear in a social media video that went viral.

Following the conclusion of the investigation, Oba Ogunjobi has been placed on leave. Until his guilt or lack thereof is established, he has been deprived of the accoutrements of the stool of Olorile of Orile-Ifo,” stated Hamzat.

“The commissioner said the decision was taken by the Ministry in consultation with the Egba Traditional Council.”

“This was in compliance with Ogun State 2021’s Obas and Chiefs’ Law, Section 52(1),” he stated. Hamzat went on to say that the state government will not tolerate anyone, regardless of position, inflicting humiliation on any of its citizens.

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered a comprehensive and confidential investigation into the allegation, according to a statement released by Ogun police spokeswoman CSP Omolola Odutola.

“The command will ensure that justice is served and members of the public will be aware of relevant updates in due course,” the spokesperson said.
