
President Bola Tinubu congratulated Nigerian music sensation Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, on winning the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, issued a statement on Monday headed ‘President Tinubu congratulates Tems on Grammy Award, applauds other Nigerian music stars’.
“On behalf of the entire nation, President Tinubu commends the singer for her unique artistry, which has brought pride to Nigeria on the global stage for the second time,” says Onanuga. Tems won the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammys.
She won the award for her song Love Me JeJe, beating out Tomorrow by Yemi Alade, MMS by Asake featuring Wizkid, Sensational by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and Higher by Burna Boy. This is Tems’ second Grammy award.
The President praised the growth of a new generation of youthful and multi-talented Nigerian musical musicians who have elevated Afrobeats to international prominence, cementing the country’s image as a powerhouse of musical innovation, originality, and cultural impact.
“From Africa to Antarctica, Asia to Australia, Europe to the Americas, the Nigerian music business, specifically, Afrobeats has become a source of national pride, encouraging a sense of identity and self-expression while uniting people across borders,” according to him.”
Tinubu praised the other Nigerian Grammy nominees: Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Lojay, Davido, and Burna Boy.
He referred to them as patriots, congratulating them for putting Nigeria on the global map of outstanding achievers in the music industry and highlighting the country’s artistic ability.
“You are all inspiration and role models to many young people.“
“The nation remains deeply grateful for your contributions to music, job creation, and tourism promotion.”
“I wish you all continued success in your musical careers,” he stated.
