Usman Yusuf, a former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), has been charged with fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was taken into custody by EFCC agents after they raided his home in Abuja.

In the presence of his wife and kids, the arrest took place on Wednesday at approximately 4:46 p.m. The professor of bone marrow transplantation and hematology-oncology was taken by armed agents.

A federal capital territory (FCT) high court judge, Chinyere Nwecheonwu, heard the defendant’s plea of not guilty to the five-count charge on Monday.

Following the arraignment, the defendant’s attorney, O.I. Habeeb, asked the court to remand his client in the custody of the EFCC until the bail application was heard.

The trial judge, however, stated that the defendant could not be in the custody of the EFCC following arraignment, so she ordered his remand to the Kuje Correctional Center.

The defendant’s bail hearing has been postponed until February 12.

In 2019, Yusuf was fired by former President Muhammadu Buhari seven months after a Federal Ministry of Health fact-finding panel suggested that he be fired for allegedly mismanaging N919 million.
