The Oyo State Government has officially converted 1,591 local government ad-hoc workers into permanent staff.

This decision, initially approved by Governor Seyi Makinde in October of the previous year, aims to address staffing gaps within the 33 Local Government Councils across the state. Hon. Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, announced that the appointment letters for the newly permanent staff are now available for collection.

He emphasized that the recruitment process adhered to all necessary protocols and was executed diligently.

Successful applicants are advised to collect their appointment letters from the Local Government Service Commission between Monday, February 3, and Thursday, February 6, 2025. Collection hours are set from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily. Commissioner Ojo also stressed that collection of appointment letters by proxy is strictly prohibited.

This moveis seen as part of Governor Makinde’s broader recruitment drive, which aims to bolster the human resource capacity within local governments.

By investing in the workforce, the governor is not only creating job opportunities but also ensuring that local governments are better equipped to deliver quality services to their constituents.

As the Oyo State Government continues to prioritize workers’ welfare and enhance local governance, the conversion of these ad-hoc positions to permanent roles marks another step towards building a more resilient and effective administrative framework. Governor Makinde’s efforts in this regard are expected to yield significant benefits for the state’s development and the well-being of its citizens.

Meanwhile, there is a growing argument and controversy surrounding the true fiscal autonomy of local governments in Nigeria. Some are curious about who ideally should recruit for the local governments and eventually pay the lg workers.
