In a statement released Thursday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, by its Senate President Babatunde Akinteye, the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) urged the Federal Ministry of Education and the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria Nsuka to restore the institution’s accountability and guarantee that students receive the high-quality education they are entitled to.
NANS also backed the Governing Council’s creation of a committee to look into the students’ accusations against the Registrar.
One of the accusations, according to Akinteye, was that the university purposefully delayed fumigating its 27 dorms in spite of serious bug infestations.
He clarified that when the acting vice chancellor took office, he put the wellbeing of the students first and obtained the required permissions from the university’s Management Tenders’ Board and the Pro-Chancellor on October 28, 2024, to undertake the fumigation.
“The purposeful delay in fumigating the university’s 27 dorms, despite severe pest infestations, including bedbugs, rats, mosquitoes, and even snakes, which pose serious health risks to students, is one of the most concerning examples of this sabotage.”
Before the fumigation finally started in January 2025, students had to put up with unsafe and unsanitary circumstances for months due to needless delays.
We support the UNN Governing Council’s decision to form a committee to look into these troubling events and fully support the Council Chairman, acknowledging his honesty and dedication to running the university properly.
Additionally, since UNN campus students have contacted us to demand justice in this case, we strongly ask the council to see to it that justice is served.
In order to restore accountability and guarantee that students receive the high-quality education and welfare they are entitled to, NANS consequently exhorts the Federal Ministry of Education, the Governing Council, and all other pertinent authorities to take immediate action.
He maintained, “We will not tolerate the UNN’s advancement being halted by administrative misbehavior. It is an institution of national pride.”
