The political upheaval in the All Progressives Congress (APC) has led to the expulsion of Rauf Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and two-term Governor of Osun State, citing allegations of anti-party activities.

This expulsion decision was confirmed through an official letter from the party’s leadership, marks a dramatic turn in Aregbesola’s relationship with the APC, a party he once led in his home state.

The letter, titled “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You,” was jointly signed by Tajudeen Lawal, the State Chairman, and Alao Olabisi Kamoru, the Secretary.

It indicated that the decision stemmed from an investigation conducted by the State Executive Committee (SEC), which concluded that Aregbesola’s actions had undermined the unity and integrity of the party.

The SEC emphasized that such disloyalty could not be tolerated, warning Aregbesola against identifying as a member or acting on behalf of the APC in any capacity.

Aregbesola’s expulsion follows a tumultuous period marked by his leadership of a faction within the APC known as The Osun Progressives, which subsequently rebranded itself as the Omoluabi Caucus.

This faction has long been at odds with the state party leadership, leading to a series of conflicts that culminated in his recent ousting.

At a meeting of the Omoluabi Caucus held on Sunday, Aregbesola addressed his supporters, declaring the group’s intention to depart from the APC.

He explained that their exit was a strategic move to establish a more robust political movement in light of the party’s dwindling influence in Osun State.

“We are leaving to build a stronger political movement,” he asserted, emphasizing the need for a renewed political strategy.

The expulsion of Aregbesola is seen as a critical step by the APC to restore order and unity within its ranks. Party officials have reiterated the importance of loyalty and cohesion, with one unnamed official stating, “The party cannot tolerate disloyalty and divisive actions.”
