According to Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the interior minister, the administration deported roughly 828 illegal immigrants.

During a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, 2024, he stated that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) personnel conducted the exercise.

Nevertheless, the minister made no reference to any illegal activity or criminal components among the individuals who were expelled. Immigrants who want to live in Nigeria are required by the country’s constitution to hold residency permits.

About 300,000 illegal immigrants, primarily from Chad, Niger, Benin, and Cameroun, are estimated by the NIS to be in the nation.

The Shehu Shagari regime deported a large number of illegal immigrants, particularly Ghanaians, in the 1980s under the slogan “Ghana must go.”

According to the minister, foreigners’ residency cards will no longer be automatically extended unless there are exceptional circumstances.
