The White House Announces the Agreement with Colombia on Repatriated Migrants late Sunday night.

Their transportation back to the country via U.S. military aircraft is also accepted.

This agreement comes after a significant standoff earlier in the day when two U.S. military planes carrying deportees were blocked from landing in Colombia, igniting a series of tariff threats between President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

The confrontation began when President Petro rejected the military planes, asserting that the U.S. “can’t treat Colombian migrants like criminals.”

In retaliation, Trump announced a series of stringent measures, including a proposed “emergency 25% tariffs” on all Colombian imports, which would escalate to 50% within a week, as well as a “travel ban” for Colombian citizens and the revocation of visas for Colombian officials residing in the U.S.“

These measures are just the beginning.

Trump declared in a post on Truth Social. In response, President Petro threatened to impose a 25% retaliatory tariff increase on U.S. goods, using social media to voice his objections to the deployment of military planes and the treatment of migrants.

However, he hinted at a potential compromise by indicating that Colombia would consider accepting repatriated migrants on civilian planes. As tensions simmered, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Chicago shared images of their teams collaborating with federal law enforcement on enforcement actions related to immigration.

By late Sunday, the situation took a turn when White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that both nations had reached an agreement for the “unrestricted acceptance” of Colombian migrants.

The new terms allow for their return to Colombia “including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay.
