The Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) Governing Council has appointed a nine-member panel to investigate the sexual harassment claim made against Prof. Abayomi Fasina, the university’s vice chancellor.
According to a statement signed by Mufutau Ibrahim, the secretary of the Council and the university’s registrar, the Council made the decision during an emergency meeting on Friday, January 24, 2025.
It mentioned that internet organizations Sahara Reporters and the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) released a number of audio recordings claiming that the vice chancellor had sexually harassed the deputy director of university works, Engr. Mrs. Folashade Adebayo.
It also stated that “The Governing Council extensively discussed the issues and observed that the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has been in the news lately for the wrong reasons and that the negative stories are obscuring the remarkable achievements of the University.
“The Council consequently set up a nine-member committee to investigate the allegations thoroughly and get to the root of the matter, within three weeks.”
The panel’s mandate is to look into the origin of the widely circulated audio recording that claims the vice chancellor engaged in unethical behavior and bought the positions of registrar and bursar
It also has to look into the motivation behind the recording and how it became popular on social media.
Additionally, the committee is tasked with looking into the claims made by Engineer Adebayo, specifically the claim of immoral advances against the Vice-Chancellor, and reviewing all prior actions and attempts by the police, the previous chairman of the Council, and others to disprove Adebayo’s claims.
Any other matter pertaining to the claims must also be investigated.
“The Council hopes to consider the report of the committee at its next meeting scheduled for 3rd week of February, 2025,” it stated.
In the meanwhile, the Council urged the public and members of the University community to maintain composure and concentration, declaring that “there will be no sacred cows” and reaffirming its commitment to justice.
