Adebayo Osayemi, a teacher, was sentenced to two years in prison by a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mapo, Ibadan, for stealing N237,000 worth of his employer’s phone and money.

The magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Latunji, told reporters that she convicted Osayemi and sentenced him based on the police’s evidence against him and his guilty plea.

“Osayemi is hereby, sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour, without any option of fine,” Latunji said.

The defendant had previously told the court that the crime was perpetrated on January 13 at No. 3, Church St., behind the Fagbemi filling station, Orita-Challenge, Ibadan, Oyo State, according to the police prosecutor, Insp. Oluseye Akinola.

Prosecutors claim that Osayemi walked into the office of Funmilayo Adesinmi, the complainant and proprietress of Montesseri Gofas Nursery and Primary School in Ibadan, after closely observing her movements.

He added that when the convict visited the office, Adesinmi told the police investigator that she had left her office for a short time to buy food from a local market, leaving three children at the school.

According to Akinola, when Adesinmi’s daughter saw Osayemi moving in, they found that a Techno Smart 4 phone she had left on her desk, worth N95,000, and €20, or N35,000, had vanished.

Additionally, according to the prosecutor, the defendant moved N82,000 and N25,000 from Adesinmi’s Money Point and First bank accounts to his Opay and UBA accounts, respectively, before to his arrest.

“The offense violated Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Law of Oyo State 2000,” he said.
