A female prospective corps member was killed in an accident while attending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Ebonyi State’s Afikpo North Local Government Area.

In a 14-seater bus involved in the collision, the deceased was one of 12 potential corps members.

While her coworkers and other passengers suffered varying degrees of injuries, the female corps member, whose name could not be determined at the time this report was filled out, was reported to have died from her wounds.

The bus lost control and collided with a parked vehicle in the road when the corps members boarded it in Enugu on their way to the NYSC orientation camp in Afikpo town for their three-week oriental course, according to the source.

They are thought to be potential recruits for the corps members in 2024 Batch C Stream II.

Residents and security personnel pulled them from the wrecked bus and hurried them to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) for medical attention.

Igwe Henry, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ Sector Commander for Ebonyi State, verified the collision.

However, he said that since the victims were rescued before his officers arrived on the scene, he does not have any information regarding the casualties.

He said, ”At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information and got to the scene, the victims had been rescued.

“However, the crash occurred at about 14.00 hours. The route was Amasiri-Okiigwe which they call Amenu village in Okposi.

“Two vehicles were involved, one was a Toyota commercial bus, grey colour and the other was a Mercedes-Benz tipper (truck), a commercial Mercedes-Benz tipper, the regular Tipper that you see around,” he said.

Foluke Oladeinde, NYSC’s Ebonyi State Coordinator, expressed her disbelief.

“I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital now. Yes the accident occurred but I can’t talk right now,” she stated.
