President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and Ogoni leaders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The delegation, which includes Senator Lee Maeba, Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, and other prominent leaders, may be discussing the Ogoni clean-up and resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland, although the agenda has not been made public.
This meeting comes after a coalition of civil society organizations demanded $1 trillion from the Federal Government for the cleanup of the Niger Delta and compensation for lost livelihoods before resuming crude oil production in Ogoniland.
The organizations expressed concerns over the government’s plans, citing historical environmental degradation and the need for environmental justice.
Notably, President Tinubu had previously assured Ogoni leaders of his commitment to unlocking the human and natural resource potential of Ogoniland while ensuring environmental and economic security .
The meeting may be a step towards realizing this goal.
