The FCT Police Command has detained Peter Ugan, an HIV-positive man, on suspicion of raping Ngozi (last name withheld), a youngster with sickle cell disease.
After a crowd nearly lynched Ugan, 34, of Ogoja, Cross River State, detectives from the Mabushi Division arrested him.
On Monday, January 6, 2025, Ugan allegedly raped the virgin after luring her into a room, according to the Nigerian Tribune.
Additionally, it was learned that during the third rape, Ugan hit the girl so hard that she began to bleed continuously.
Evidently conscious of the seriousness of what he had done, Ugan locked Ngozi in the room to prevent her from leaving to reveal him and went to get drugs for the girl that no doctor had prescribed to halt the bleeding.
Information obtained showed that at the time of the event, Ngozi, who was residing with her aunt in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, traveled to Abuja to enroll at the Government Day Secondary School, Mabushi, in order to finish her secondary education.
As a young girl, she reportedly avoided Ugan after he pursued her for a date during the first week she was here.
It was reported that on January 6, 2025, Ugan visited his friend Isaac’s chamber. Isaac resides in one of the unfinished buildings in a compound whose owner is frequently late.
The suspect reportedly resided far from the compound, but anytime he ran out of kerosene or other ingredients, he would go to his friend’s house to cook. When the friend was trapped, he used to perform the same thing at Ugan’s residence.
Ngozi, who lives with her parents in the same big compound as Ugan’s companion, claimed that on that fateful day, she was returning the plate her sister had used to purchase food from a vendor. He beckoned her as she was walking by to ask her to help him purchase sachet water.
The 17-year-old girl claimed she received more than she had anticipated when she went to gather money to purchase the water. She claimed that after observing that the house was silent, Ugan allegedly pulled her inside, shoved her to the ground, and had sex with her. Blood began to flow from her intimate area by the time he removed his organ.
Ugan reportedly locked Ngozi inside, walked outside, and came back with some medicine for her to consume. When he noticed that the blood was still streaming continuously, he also began washing her legs. He then gave her permission to go.
On her return home, her mother, Mrs Elizabeth Aroh, seeing her daughter’s condition, became distraught.
Ugan was reportedly on the verge of “escaping” when the mob caught up with him and severely battered him.
The publication was informed by a source that if it weren’t for several neighbors who called the FCT police command in distress to save the culprit, he would have been killed.
Promptly, CP Olatunji Disu directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Mabushi Division to go to the scene where the suspect was rescued and taken into custody.
The girl’s mother also brought her to the police station, while she was still bleeding profusely. The girl reportedly collapsed and fainted twice, and was rushed to the emergency unit at Maitama General Hospital.
A doctor from Nyanya Hospital was called to perform surgery on her to halt the bleeding when it became too much for the people on duty that evening. It was also learnt that Ngozi needed two pints of blood transfusions in order to stabilise.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for examinations by the investigating police officer. To everyone’s surprise, Ugan tested positive for HIV according to the test findings.
The girl’s mother experienced another emotional collapse as a result of that.
Speaking to the police, Ugan’s brother claimed to have encouraged the suspect to be tested after noticing his gaunt appearance prior to the incident.
Ugan admitted to the police after questioning that he was unaware of his HIV status because he had completed certain testing six months prior to the occurrence.
However, Ugan stated in an interview that Ngozi was his girlfriend and revealed that he was employed as a front desk officer at a restaurant.
“She (Ngozi) was my girlfriend. I approached her for dating and she accepted. I started the relationship with her over two weeks before the incident. On January 6, I went to my friend’s house to cook and she came to visit me when she saw me. My friend lives in the same premises with her parents,” he said.
“She ate with me and we were playing. While we were together, I asked her if we could make love and she said yes. It was between 11 am and 12 noon. I brought out my condom and had s3x with her. That was when I discovered that she was a virgin, and she started bleeding.”
The suspect claimed to have obtained a condom from his friend’s room after looking around and determining where the friend kept one when he was asked how he had one when he only visited his friend’s house to cook.
“After the s3x, she started bleeding. I asked her why she didn’t tell me that she was a virgin. I stepped out to get her some medications, but she told me to lock the door when going as she was scared and would not want anyone to come in. I told her it would be bad if I locked her in but she said it did not matter.
“So, I locked the door and went to get some medications like Flagyl, Buscopan and Diclofenac. I bought a malt drink and she took the medicine. I bought another food for her. She washed up and stood up, saying that she was going.
“After she left, I went to my own residence. I tried to explain to my cousin what happened and he told me that we would need to go to her parents’ house to explain things and offer to take care of her if there’s need for proper treatment.
“We were about to go when I saw people, four security men, the girl’s mother and her siblings. I was taken to the police station and detained. The following day, I was brought out and taken for a test.”
When questioned about why he felt the victim was a virgin and violated her, the suspect acknowledged.
““It was a little bit hard but the condom I used was oily and I didn’t really feel the obstacle. It was when I withdrew that I saw it was that much.”
When he asked the girl why she hadn’t told him she was a virgin after he finished the sexual act, she was asked if she hadn’t cried out in agony so he could understand her feelings.
“I didn’t see her cry before I penetrated her, but she was very stiff and squeezing her face and hands,” he said.
The suspect had no explanation for his actions after witnessing her suffering.
When asked if he knew enough about medical procedures to know what drugs to buy the girl, he replied that a pharmacy had given him the prescription.
He said that until he arrived at the police station, he was unaware that the girl had sickle cell illness.
He continued by saying that it wasn’t until the police took him for a test that he discovered he was HIV positive.
“I thought her looks were natural, I didn’t know she has sickle cell disease. Also, I didn’t know I was HIV positive. The Police took me to the hospital for tests and when the results were out, I was told that I was HIV-positive. Honestly, I didn’t know I had it in my system. I used a condom because I didn’t want to get her pregnant. I was not also ready to start a family as I don’t have the capacity for now.”
