Liverpool will be without Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez for weeks as coach Arne Slot revealed the extent of their injuries.
Jota was absent from the squad for the Reds’ 2-0 win against Brentford on Saturday due to an issue he sustained after the draw against Nottingham Forest a few days prior. Gomez, meanwhile, has not featured for Slot’s team since the end of 2024 having been ruled out with a hamstring problem.
While the Dutchman confirmed that Jota “overloaded a certain muscle” in last week’s substitute appearance, he expects the Portuguese forward to be available again before centre-back Gomez is ready to return, though he denied that either will be out for months.
“Maybe Jota [will be back] a bit earlier than Joe. Both of them are expected to be back with us in weeks rather than months,” he said at a press conference. “But I’ve said many times before that the last stage of rehab is the most difficult one, or the one that sometimes [can] add a few days or not. It’s clear that we are expecting them to be back with us in the upcoming weeks. It is always difficult to say exactly how long it is. Both of them are not going to be out for months, that’s for sure, as long as the rehab goes as planned.”
Slot will have to make do without the pair as his side gear up for a Champions League showdown against Lille on Tuesday, which will be followed by a match against Ipswich in the Premier League.
