Darwin Nunez admitted that he is “going through a rough patch” after scoring twice for Liverpool against Brentford.
Despite a resilient defensive display from Thomas Frank’s side, the Bees eventually succumbed to the relentless pressure of the Reds, who registered a staggering 37 shots during the match. Nunez emerged as the hero for Liverpool and scored two stoppage-time goals to snatch a hard-fought 2-0 win for the league leaders.
Nunez has faced intense scrutiny in recent weeks due to his poor form in front of goal. The Uruguayan had scored just four times, prior to his double against Brentford, in 26 appearances across competitions, prompting speculation that the Reds were willing to offload the striker in January.
After the game, Nunez opened up about his recent struggles and the mental challenges he has faced. Speaking candidly in an interview with Sky Sports, he said: “I think you have to stay mentally strong, never give up. Yes, there are moments that are very difficult for us players, for me, it’s right now. But I never throw the towel in. I always carry on working. In training, if I need to stay and practice more, I stay to improve. I think the work that I do on the pitch to help the team to defend as well. I think I’ve always done it well but I haven’t scored goals and I know people look at that. The striker has to score goals.
“Acknowledging his rough patch, Nunez emphasized the importance of perseverance and maintaining a strong mentality: “The truth is that I’m going through a rough patch and, like I said before, I stay focused on my job and giving everything for Liverpool. I think it’s important to keep my head up and I always say I’ve got to work because I need to improve. I stay strong with this mentality and with the support of my family and the fans that are incredible.”
Liverpool’s packed schedule continues with a crucial Champions League fixture against Lille on Tuesday. Following that, they return to Premier League action with a match against Ipswich on January 25.
