President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Mr. Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guarantee Trust Bank Plc, Mr. Kola Adesina, Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on the well-earned awarding of honorary doctorate degrees by the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was honoured by the university for her groundbreaking work as the first African woman to head the World Trade Organisation and for bringing about important changes in Nigeria’s banking industry.
It acknowledged Mr. Adeola for his innovative contributions to the Nigerian banking industry and for starting the FATE Foundation, an NGO that provides financing and training to aspiring Nigerian business owners.
University alumni Mr. Adesina received recognition for his creative contributions to the energy sector. At Sahara Power Group, an energy and infrastructure company with activities in 42 countries, Adesina serves as the Group Managing Director (GMD).
At the university’s 55th convocation on January 16, the three eminent Nigerians received honorary Doctor of Science degrees (D. Sc.)
President Tinubu expressed his admiration for “these exceptional Nigerians who have excelled in their careers and are role models for the nation’s youth” in a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
President Tinubu acknowledged Mr. Adesina’s noteworthy contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector in one of the congratulatory letters, emphasising that this recognition demonstrates his dedication to furthering the country’s development.
“Your visionary leadership at Sahara Power Group has been transformative, ensuring sustainable power solutions and inspiring professionals across the energy sector to pursue excellence.
“This honorary degree is a well-deserved acknowledgement of your tireless efforts to elevate engineering standards and drive innovation in Nigeria,” President Tinubu stated.
According to the President, the three Nigerian giants are deserving of praise for their dedication, drive for success, and priceless contributions to the country’s economic growth.
“I encourage you to continue to serve as beacons of hope, innovation, and inspiration for future generations. Please know that your contributions remain deeply valued by the government and people of Nigeria,” the President stated.
