Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, has expressed deep worry about widespread parental neglect following the rescue of 230 street children in Kano.
Daurawa said in a viral video published on social media that Hisbah cops carried out a scan of critical sites like railway lines, beneath bridges, markets, and vehicle parks.
He said the operation, which took place between 1 a.m. and 3 p.m., revealed an alarming number of children roaming the streets when they should have been secure at home.
“These children have been raised in public spaces—railway stations, under flyovers, markets, and motor parks—exposed to harsh weather conditions without any adult supervision,” Daurawa told the crowd. “We found four children dead due to the extreme cold, and many others are suffering from severe illnesses.”
Despite the 230 children recovered during the operation, Daurawa stated that the problem is even more pervasive. “In our initial sweep, we rescued 230, but we’ve tracked an estimated 5,000 children living under similar conditions across Kano,” the official said.
The Hisbah Board, however, confronts tremendous problems in responding to the issue. “We are now sheltering the youngsters at the Hajj camp, which has a maximum capacity of 230. We commend the Kano State Governor for supporting their care, but urgent, long-term initiatives are needed to address the core causes of child homelessness,” Daurawa emphasized.
