On Wednesday, suspected cultists shot and killed Ikot Osurua, also known as Prince, a final-year student at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, in his room.

The terrible event happened at Prince’s home on Abuja Street in Ikot Osurua at around one in the morning. Prince, a student pursuing a Higher National Diploma (HND2) in Computer Science, was getting ready to defend his project after finishing his final exams.

Witnesses said that after the shooters broke into the property, they went straight to Prince’s room and shot him in the belly. After the attackers left, his girlfriend, who was there when the attack occurred, alerted the neighbors by raising the alarm.

Prince passed away from his wounds after being taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to a neighbor who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Nothing or anyone was robbed in the compound by the gunmen. They simply shot him and walked away. He was active in the choir at his church and well-liked in the community. The source claimed, “We were shocked at how he died.”

The neighbor remembered seeing Prince and his girlfriend the day before and remarked on how happy they seemed. Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, I caught sight of them. We all laughed when I made a joke about them both wearing face masks. The person continued, “It’s difficult to believe he’s gone.”

The incident was confirmed by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command. According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John, there have been robberies and cult-related activity in the region.

“Information at our disposal indicates that there were robbery and cult operations in the area. They invaded and robbed, during which a student was shot. Investigation is ongoing,” DSP John said.

Prince’s murder has sparked worries about Ikot Osurua villagers’ and pupils’ safety.

Prince’s passing serves as just another sobering reminder of the insecurity and violence that some areas of Akwa Ibom State are experiencing. His loved ones, friends, and the Polytechnic community are in deep sorrow over the passing of a young guy who was characterized as gifted and energetic.

As the investigations go, further updates are anticipated.
