In the Igbe neighborhood in the Ikorodu region of Lagos State, Kayode Goriola, a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, was murdered by alleged kidnappers.
The Incident happened on Saturday after midnight. The attackers reportedly rushed the area after penetrating through the community’s swampy region.
But they ran upon Goriola and his associate, who tried to stop the kidnapping attempt.
According to the source, the kidnappers shot Goriola in the process and then whisked his colleague away.
He stated, “Goriola and one of his colleagues were going about their duty when the kidnappers arrived through a swampy area in the community. The two of them attempted to restrict the kidnappers but they were overpowered. The kidnappers thereafter attempted to take them away but Goriola refused and that made them shoot him in the head and the other person was taken away.”
According to a local who went by Okla, it was the fourth time the town would see such an occurrence. In the previous attack, he said, a security guard was slain and another was injured, and a couple was abducted.
“The community is prone to kidnappings. And this is the fourth time kidnappers have attacked us. A man and a woman believed to be a couple was abducted from their vehicle last year and the kidnappers left their baby inside. A ransom was paid before they were released. A similar incident also resulted in the death of a member of the vigilante group, while their leader was shot in the arm and hospitalised for two months at the Ikorodu General Hospital,” he said.
Lawal Abdullahi, the leader of the community’s vigilante organization, verified the incident when contacted. However, he stated that he was occupied with the deceased’s funeral arrangements.
He said, “We have reported at the station about retrieving his corpse from the mortuary. You can hear people’s voices in the background. We can talk later in the night.”
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer, was not reachable since his phone did not answer calls. At the time this report was submitted, he had not responded to a text message that had been sent to him.
