Lionel Messi may be in line for a sensational return to Barcelona in 2025, with Inter Miami’s contract plans potentially triggering a transfer clause.

The Argentine superstar is entering the final year of his current contract in Florida. Those terms, however, allow the option of a 12-month extension until 2026. The Herons plan to keep the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner at Chase Stadium.

Messi has his sights set on the next World Cup, where he hopes to defend his worldwide title in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and staying in America would make the process of getting there easier.

If Messi agrees to stay in Miami, he will have completed two full seasons in the MLS. That would allow him to make a loan move during the offseason. According to El Nacional, this might pave the path for steps to be traced back to Catalunya.

It is suggested that Messi could join Barcelona after the 2025 MLS season ends in order to stay as sharp as possible for the World Cup. During their time in Major League Soccer, Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane were loaned to Premier League clubs Arsenal and Aston Villa, respectively.

Barcelona has never hidden their desire to have Messi back at Camp Nou. A playing comeback was thought to be impossible when the South American club terminated ties with them in 2021, but he may now have the opportunity to improve his astonishing record of 672 goals for the Liga giants.
