The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has praised the US government for repatriating $52.88 million in recovered assets linked to former Minister of Petroleum Resources Diezani Alison-Madueke.
CISLAC praised the Nigerian and US governments’ efforts in reaching the milestone and emphasized the importance of transparent and accountable use of the money.
CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, issued a statement urging the Federal Government to ensure that recovered assets are directed toward visible development projects that directly benefit Nigerians. “According to the Minister of Justice, the majority of the monies collected would be utilized to finance rural electrification through the World Bank.
However, we want additional information about this strategy. For example, will government agencies be involved? How much of the monies will reach the citizens?
“This is critical, especially given that the proposed 2025 budget includes substantial sums set aside for cars and other frivolous items that do not represent economic reality or address the country’s pervasive hunger.
We require greater clarity regarding the use of these funds, as well as the exact terms of the agreement between all parties,” he stated. CISLAC also underlined the significance of complying with the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act 2022, arguing for transparency in disseminating facts regarding asset recoveries and stating that citizens must be able to follow the impact of these money to ensure accountability.
CISLAC emphasized that the visible and impactful use of these assets was critical to rebuilding public trust in the government’s battle against corruption. “If these funds are not used transparently for the benefit of Nigerians, concerns of re-looting would undoubtedly develop. Rafsanjani warned:
“The era of mismanaging recovered assets must end.”
CISLAC reiterated its commitment to advocating for the return of looted monies and their legitimate use for national development.
The advocacy center asked the Federal Government to expand on its accomplishment by pursuing more pending asset recovery cases and ensuring that all revenues are used to enhance Nigerians’ lives.
