The Economic Community of West African States condemned the recent violent attacks in Northern Benin, which killed scores of people.

The incidents took place on Wednesday in the Point Trible neighborhood and were carried out by unidentified armed persons.

The ECOWAS Commission issued a statement on Sunday expressing condolences to Benin’s government, security forces, and people, as well as the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty.

“The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States categorically condemns the atrocious attacks in the Point Trible area by unidentified armed individuals on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, which resulted in dozens of deaths.

“The ECOWAS Commission expresses its deepest condolences to the government, security forces, and people of the Republic of Benin, as well as to the families of the brave soldiers who lost their lives protecting their country and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” the commission’s statement continued.

ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to countering terrorism in the region, emphasizing the significance of the current Counterterrorism Plan of Action.

To combat the growing threat of terrorism, the organisation urged member governments to increase collaboration, notably in intelligence sharing and border security.

The regional group expressed solidarity with Benin’s government and people, and reaffirmed its commitment to assisting member states in maintaining the safety and security of citizens across West Africa.

“ECOWAS remains committed to eradicating terrorism in West Africa, including the continuous implementation of the Counterterrorism Plan of Action in all its forms.

“ECOWAS urges all member states to strengthen their cooperation in intelligence sharing and border security.”

ECOWAS fully supports Benin’s government and people. “It reiterates its determination to accompany member states in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of Community citizens,” the press release stated.
