The Nigeria Police Force has declared February 1, 2025, as the beginning date of nationwide inspection and enforcement to ensure compliance with the law, meaning that anyone driving without a Third Party Motor Insurance policy will suffer legal repercussions.
This was revealed at the Force Headquarters in Abuja during a working visit by Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), to Mr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
In addition to reminding the IGP of his previous request for help in enforcing all mandatory insurance policies, the Commissioner for Insurance took advantage of the occasion to congratulate the IGP on his noteworthy accomplishments, especially the recent license acquisition for the Police Insurance Company.
However, this time, he focused only on Third-Party Motor Insurance. Additionally, Mr. Omosehin promised to offer the assistance required to guarantee the smooth implementation of third-party auto insurance nationwide.
The CFI emphasized the necessity of educating Nigerian police officers and launching a widespread awareness campaign in order to ensure the success of this project.
In response, the IGP stated that he agreed with the CFI’s stance and acknowledged that third-party auto insurance is required in Nigeria.
Mr. Kayode Egbetokun emphasized that breaking this legislation is illegal, but regrettably, only 30% of cars in the nation are insured. He also emphasized the many advantages of having insurance, emphasizing the value of safeguarding people and property.
Before driving on Nigerian roads, he advised drivers to have their cars at least third-party insurance coverage.
The IGP affirmed the Police’s commitment to working with all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and businesses to secure everyone’s property and life.
The attendees included Senior Police Officers, Dr. Talmis Usman, Director of Inspectorate, Mr. Bankole Ajebola of NAICOM, Deputy Commissioner, Technical, Dr. Usman Jankara, Deputy Commissioner Finance and Administration, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Director Legal, Enforcement & Market Development, and others.
