Senator Azuta Mbata elected as the new President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the interests of the Igbo people.

The election was held in Enugu, during the annual general assembly.

Senator Mbata, In his acceptance speech, emphasized unity and collaboration among the Igbo people, stating, “It is time for us to come together, irrespective of our political affiliations, to advance the interests of our people and promote the rich cultural heritage of Ndigbo.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, congratulating Senator Mbata on his victory expressed hope that the new leadership would foster peace and development in the Southeast, saying, “Senator Mbata’s election as President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a testament to the democratic spirit of our nation.

“I urge him to prioritize dialogue and collaboration, not only within the Igbo community but with other regions as well.”Tinubu’s comments have been welcomed by many as a sign of the federal government’s commitment to engaging with regional leaders to enhance national unity.

The election comes at a time when Ohanaeze Ndigbo faces internal divisions, with reports of a factional leadership vying for recognition.

Bar. Uche Okwukwu have also reportedly emerged as new President of the body in a parallel election.

both Mbata and Okwukwu are from the Ikwerre ethnic nationality in Rivers State which has sparked a recent claim to be Igbos because of the slot to Rivers State to produce the new President of the Igbo Socio-cultural umbrella group.
