The Nigerian federal government has assured the populace that it is prepared to manage any possible Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) epidemic.
Officials stressed that preventative measures are in place in addition to continuous enhancements to the country’s healthcare system.
Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, told Nigerians not to panic, saying that the virus is not new. He also advised the people to emphasize hygiene as the virus’s season draws near.
Salako underlined that HMPV has been linked to severe acute respiratory problems and lower respiratory tract infections in Nigeria, especially in those with compromised immune systems, children, and elderly people.
ireport247new reported the rise of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China and other nations, such as Hong Kong and Malaysia on Junuary 6,2025 and the first HMPV case in India is reported after an 8-month-old baby in Bengaluru tests positive. The symptoms of the HMPV are comparable to those of common viral illnesses as the common cold, influenza, or RSV.
Salako gave assurances in an interview with The Nation on Monday that the Federal Government has stepped up its monitoring efforts through pertinent organizations like the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
“This is to ensure that the respiratory infection that is suspected of being caused by the HMPV, which is seen at a higher rate in some parts of China, is prevented from entering the country.”
What Are HMVP’s Symptoms?
Symptoms of most viral infections, including HMPV, include fever.
Cough: May be chronic and produce phlegm.
Cold symptoms include sneezing and a runny or stuffy nose.
Generalized muscular soreness and exhaustion
Overall Weakness: Experiencing fatigue or low energy
In severe cases, people who have weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions may have dyspnea or respiratory distress.
Advice on Preventive Hygiene Practices:
Hands should be regularly cleaned for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
When soap is not available, use hand sanitizers with an alcohol basis.
Assign a different room to a family member who exhibits symptoms in order to isolate them.
To reduce the spread of droplets, encourage the person experiencing symptoms to wear a mask.
