The Nigerian military has fallen three spots in the most recent international military ranking.
According to the Global Firepower rating, the Nigerian Armed Forces ranked 39th out of 145 nations examined for 2024.
This represents a drop from its 35th place in 2022 and 36th place in 2023 rankings. This two-year decline occurs in spite of the military’s purported victories against terrorists in Nigeria during that time, as well as the purchase of fighter jets and other combat aids.
The United States remained the world’s top-ranked military for the 18th year in a row. The United States exhibits “commanding values in many major material, financial, and resource categories,” according to GFP.
Russia, China, and India are placed second, third, and fourth, respectively, behind the United States. 5th place goes to South Korea, 6th to the UK, 7th to Japan, 8th to Turkey, 9th to Pakistan, and 10th to Italy. France (ranked 11th), Brazil (12th), Indonesia (ranked 13th), Iran (ranked 14th), and Egypt (15th) round out the top 15.
Germany, Spain, Israel, Ukraine, and Australia are ranked 16th through 20th, respectively.
Nigeria fell from third to fourth place among African nations as well.
Egypt holds the top spot in Africa, with Algeria, South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Angola, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, and Sudan following in order.
The report claims that the rankings assigned to nations were determined by taking into account more than 60 elements.
“The finalised Global Firepower ranking below uses more than 60 different factors to determine a nation’s PowerIndex (‘PwrIndx’) score, with categories ranging from the number of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography,” the GFP report said.
Smaller, more technologically sophisticated countries may now compete with larger, less developed powers because to our proprietary formula.
The list, which is created every year, is further refined by applying special modifications in the form of bonuses and penalties.Out of the 145 nations taken into consideration for the annual GFP review, Nigeria is ranked 39th for 2024.
The PwrIndx* score for the country is 0.5619 (a score of 0.0000 is regarded as “perfect”). The last review of this entry was on January 9, 2024.
Each country’s “PwrIndx” (Power Index) score is determined by evaluating its citizens’ individual and collective values using an internal algorithm. When official figures are not available, some values are assumed,” it continued.
When asked, Brig. Gen. Tukur, Gusau, Director of Defence Information, responded, “I am not aware of the ranking and I can’t comment on it.”
